Après Histoire de l’accouchement dans un Québec moderne paru en 2014, Andrée Rivard aborde cette fois une question étonnamment inédite: et les pères dans tout ça? Quel rôle jouent-ils lors de la grossesse et de l’accouchement? Et surtout, comment leur participation s’est-elle transformée durant le 20e siècle? Cette histoire ravive la mémoire de ces pères qui ont fait les frais de la médicalisation croissante, ballottés entre contraintes sociales et aspirations profondes. Auparavant témoins privilégiés de l’accouchement, lorsque celui-ci se déroulait à la maison, les pères ont perdu en l’espace de quelques années la possibilité même d’assister à la naissance de leur enfant. Devenus intrus, c’est bien souvent à travers la vitre de la pouponnière qu’ils voyaient leur bébé pour la première fois. De la naissance et des pères nous replonge dans la période des grands bouleversements, des années 1950 aux années 1980: un moment charnière qui vit éclore le mouvement d’humanisation des naissances, revendiquant entre autres la participation du père. Un écho, aussi, à la réalité des familles non traditionnelles au sein desquelles l’autre parent doit souvent lutter pour occuper la place qui lui revient.
