Parenting begins long before a child is born. For families that advocate for self-determination during childbirth, this philosophy naturally extends to how they raise their children—prioritizing independence, body autonomy, and natural health practices. By fostering an environment rooted in these values, parents lay a foundation of trust and empowerment that shapes their children’s growth and family relationships.

For Cindy PĂ©trieux, a doula and mother of three, advocating for self-determination began with her decision to have a home birth after facing medical pressures during her pregnancy. “In order to cultivate my confidence in my abilities to give birth to my baby in the VBAC project, I had to free myself from all data external to me,” she explains. “This is how I was able to ensure that trust came from me rather than being generated by external technologies or opinions.”

This empowered approach influenced her choices in supporting her children’s development. For example, she chose to extend breastfeeding and practice co-sleeping and carrying to honor her children’s needs while also fostering their independence. Her experience further deepened her commitment to holistic health, emphasizing organic nutrition and mindful caregiving practices.

Julie Aubin reflects on how self-determined birth transformed her parenting. She explains how her early commitment to empowering her children shaped thoughtful parenting choices that nurtured their emotional and physical development.

“Many of my parenting decisions were influenced by the desire to respect my own children’s autonomy,” explains Julie, who emphasizes that this foundation has helped create a family dynamic based on trust. Practices such as child-led weaning and especially family learning (homeschooling) have allowed her children to freely explore their interests and develop a strong self-awareness.

The impact of experiencing childbirth with self-determination and autonomy goes beyond the family framework, it cultivates resilience and confidence in children. Cindy notes that the autonomy she embraced in childbirth directly influenced her children’s ability to assert themselves. Her five-year-old, for example, confidently navigated teasing about his gender expression, standing firm in his identity. “I see a link with my own self-determination as a positive model for them,” she says, illustrating how empowered parents raise empowered children.

Of course, embracing self-determination in parenting comes with challenges. Cindy candidly acknowledges her initial fear of social or legal backlash for her choices, leading to a heightened sense of vigilance. Yet, this journey taught her valuable lessons about trusting herself and staying aligned with her values. She advises parents to “cultivate their inner confidence above all” and to build a supportive community that respects their individual parenting philosophy. Parenting with purpose means recognizing that the choices made during childbirth can shape a family’s entire dynamic. Families that embrace self-determination in their birth choices model confidence, autonomy, and trust—qualities that empower children to navigate life with resilience and authenticity. Parents create a nurturing environment that encourages lifelong confidence and self-awareness by fostering independence and honoring each child’s unique journey. In embracing this philosophy, parents are reminded that their advocacy for autonomy in childbirth is not just a moment—it is a guiding principle that positively influences their entire parenting journey.
